How Should I Prepare My AC Unit For The Warmer Months?

It is always tempting to turn on the AC as soon as the weather gets hot, but there are some steps you should take prior to doing this. In this article, we will discuss some helpful hints for getting your AC ready for the summer months.

Check the Filters

Over time, your air conditioner's filters can become clogged with dirt and dust, making your home harder to cool. Dirty filters cause your unit to work harder, and it can cause your electric bill to go up as a result. In addition, it can cause dust and other allergens to circulate around your home, so changing out your filter is best done as soon as possible.

Replace Your Thermostat

Before starting the summer season with the same old thermostat you've been using, you can look into replacing it with a newer model. If you have an older thermostat that uses mercury, you are losing efficiency and not saving as much as you could on your electric bill. Switching over to a digital thermometer can help your system to run more accurately, adding years of life to your unit.

Inspect the Coolant Lines

Your coolant lines are going to be wrapped in insulation in order to save energy. Over time, this insulation can be subject to dry rot and decay because of temperature changes and be exposed to the elements. It is important to examine these lines for missing or frayed insulation and to replace it where it is necessary.

Run a Test

Turn on the AC, and make sure that cool air is coming out of all your vents. You will also want to make sure that the condenser fan is running properly and that it isn't making any unusual noises. The air coming out of the machine should be warm, and if there is a problem, you can call an HVAC specialist to fix the issue before the truly hot weather begins.
